About this Event
In Georgian York there was no more fashionable place to be and be seen than promenading along New Walk. However, this stretch of the Ouse contains a wealth of history from the centuries before and the years after the fashionable walkers graced the area. Join us as we retrace their steps starting near Millennium Bridge and making our way up-river past Tower Gardens to the Ouse Bridge. Along the way we will discover stories from 2,000 years of York's history including trade and transport, money and merchants, bridges and barriers and even music and merriment. Bonnets and powdered wigs optional.
Meeting point: Millennium Bridge, on the Fulford side of the bridge, near the southern end of New Walk - Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/47jTiHk7x7xr7mhw6
Finish point: York Mansion House, St Helen's Square, York YO1 PQL.
Please note: the walking tour will end at Ouse Bridge, Low Ousegate, near the Slug & Lettuce pub (Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ei8qBtjZXmZEJ5ew6). We will then continue to York Mansion House, where walk ticket-holders have complimentary access to the house. Nathan Drake's painting, shown above, is on display in the Mansion House dining room.
This walk is offered as part of the York Georgian Festival. It takes 1.5-2 hours, and is strictly limited to 20 spaces. The route is step-free but includes various uneven surfaces, so may not be suitable for people of restricted mobility.
