"The Revolutionary Lives of Rochester's Founders: or How the Revolution Created Rochester"
In this talk we explore how the Revolutionary experiences of the first generation of inhabitants shaped the development of Rochester. Colonel Nathaniel Rochester's experiences in the war and those of the earliest representatives in Congress reflect the tensions inherent in the American Revolution which sought independence for some at the expense of others. During the war, Sullivan's punitive campaign against Seneca led to their removal from the area while also serving to advertise the Genesee Country to would-be-settlers in the post-war era.
Timothy W. Kneeland is a Professor of History and Politics at Nazareth University and director of the Museums, Archives and Public History program and also directs the Center for Public History. He has authored a number of books, articles and chapter length studies on American History, Politics, Science and Natural Disasters.
Free and open to the public. No registration required.
