Certain moments in this century have stayed with us. And they always will. August 25, 2001, is just that. It seems almost surreal to say, but The R&B Club’s next event comes almost a quarter-century to the day that the R&B icon Aaliyah tragically passed away.
There's no way not to have a connection to her music, but more importantly, Aaliyah herself. If you know anything about us, and what we pride ourselves on, this won't be simply music being played. This is a voyage and a trip back in time into one of the most captivating and abbreviated careers in music history. We’ll discuss it all. The highs, the classic records, where we were when we got the news of her death — and, yes, the R. Kelly of it all.
It's one time for Babygirl (better known as Aaliyah) on Sunday, August 23, at the only home we've ever known in Songbyrd. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door — pending there's any left. Come for the music. Because when’s the last time you heard “At Your Best (You Are Love),” any of her classic records with Missy Elliott or Ginuwine, or even “I Care 4 U” in a room full of Aaliyah fans? Stay for the discussion. Because we’re discussing it all. But leave with something even greater. The world will always miss Aaliyah. But here at The R&B Club, the story of Aaliyah Dana Houghton will never, ever be forgotten.

The R&B Club is a cultural gathering founded in 2018 that discusses the influence of R&B music. In other words, think of it as a musical book club-style meetup. Follow us on social media at @therandbclubdc for more information.
