Circus Director Shayna Swanson (Aloft Circus Arts, Brave Space) is embarking upon a brand new show creation, and is searching for collaborative, adventurous performers for the research and preliminary performance phase. The show is centered around an exciting and experimental new apparatus to be built and rebuilt in endless possible configurations of towers, bridges and who-knows-what-else to climb, play and destroy. The show will explore the capitalist expectation that we push ever forward in spite of pain, grief or trauma.Artists with a high degree of skill in cyr and gym wheel experience, bar-based aerial, duo aerial, handstands, acrobatics, gymnastics and acro dance are encouraged to apply, though no specific circus disciplines are required for this project. All performers must have strong movement skills on the ground. Performers should be physically strong, as the objects we are working with are large and heavy, though some smaller performers are also needed. Additionally, Aloft particularly values authenticity, openness and creativity in our collaborators. Please bring your true self to the audition and be prepared to share.
The audition will be held at Aloft in Chicago on Monday, April 21 from 12-4 with potential callbacks on Tuesday, April 22 from 12-4. The audition will be through invitation. Please fill out the application to be invited: https://bit.ly/thepiecescreation
This audition is for phase one of the research, culminating in 3 outdoor performances in Chicago parks. Rehearsals and shows will take place from approximately August 28 with the performances on Sept 16-18. Pay for this period will be $700/week, for a total of $2100. All rehearsal times will be in the daytime and performances in the early evening. Housing and travel costs cannot be provided at this time.
Following these presentations the selected artists may be invited to continue with the project in subsequent research periods and performances, which may include national and international residencies and touring. The show is being developed and researched between Chicago and Berlin, Germany with an anticipated completion and premiere in the Fall of 2026.
