Do experts have a moral obligation to defend their views in open forums, or does debating controversial claims merely legitimize them?
Should newspapers host back-and-forth arguments on explosive issues—or does that blur the line between expertise and ideology?
If democracy depends on argument, we’ll ask the harder question: When does argument enlighten—and when does it inflame?
