Do you have a poem or story about Persephone, Greek Goddess of the Underworld? Maybe it's one you've always loved, just discovered, or even wrote yourself!Persephone is famous for eating seeds of the pomegranate while in the Underworld, meaning that she could never entirely leave but must return for part of every year.
There are many versions of this story. Her mother told one version. Her lover, Lord of the Underworld no doubt had a different version. And Persephone herself... there have been many versions told.
Persephone's story can call to us because it's about an involuntary descent to the Underworld, and most of us have experienced that. It's about the ripping apart of the mother-daughter bond, and most of us have felt that, one way and another. It's about finding your place in the world - and still being conflicted. It's about coming into a power one never dreamed of. It's about return, and maybe forgiveness, and the cyclic nature of life.
This is an 'open mic' event at Airy Fairy, hosted by Jane Meredith, author of 'Aspecting the Goddess' and 'Journey to the Dark Goddess'. Jane will read a Persephone story and then invite others to read their poems, story extracts, sing a song, tell a story... 5-7 minutes per share. You're also welcome to come along as audience!
Free entry, bookings preferred, gold coin donation for refreshments.
