About this Event
About the Play
Two women chained to the same abuser discover that only their messy, undiscovered friendship can break the spell and free them from control. The Penguin Snare is a dark comedic tale that stares abuse in the face - but does so through the unlikely resilience, humour, and tenderness of a friendship that refuses to be broken.
A dark comedy thriller exploring coercive control, domestic abuse, and friendship, The Penguin Snare doesn’t shy away from difficult truths. The themes are urgently relevant, as rates of abuse in the UK have continued to rise since 2018. This intimate three-hander promises to make audiences laugh, cry, and clench their fists in equal measure.
About the Project
The Penguin Snare is Jacob Utzon Krefeld’s debut play, inspired by a true story shared by a survivor of abuse. Developed over two and a half years with support from Hampstead Theatre and mentorship from Sir David Gothard, the script has evolved through an extensive creative process. With funding from Arts Council England and the Jorcks Fund, we are now preparing for an R&D period ending in four work-in-progress readings at Theatre Deli, running 25–28 November 2025. These performances will enable us to test the piece with live audiences, industry professionals, and abuse experts, shaping the final stageable draft.
The creative team includes dramaturg Jennifer Davis (Hampstead Theatre) and director Tomaž Krajnc (MA Directing, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).
