The Maxey Cut: Wildlife & Flood Relief expert guided walk
About this Event
The Maxey Cut is 70 years old this year! Have you ever wanted to know more about its wildlife or history?
Join us and Jay from the Enviornmental Agency on this two hour, gently paced, walk along the Maxey Cut. Along the route we'll stop to hear about it's history, it's wildlife, key features and the important role it plays helping to protect nearby towns, villages and land from flooding.
The walk will start at Christ's College Pits Nature Reserve, on Maxey Road. From there we'll walk up to the Maxey Cut and then take a circular route. We'll begin with an introduction to "Westings Meadow" and our community heritage project which is gathering and sharing the true stories of this land.
For location, please refer to the map we have drawn below - Eventbrite's map is not able to show the exact location nor does the post code take you to the correct place. We will send directions and parking information via email when you book your ticket. Please look out for it and check your spam.
This event is suitable for adults with walking stamina (we’ll be on our feet for about 2 hours) and accompanied children over 10 who like a gentle paced, quiet walk looking and learning about nature and history 🌿
This is a publicly funded event. Non-attendees who do not cancel in advance of the event so that their tickets can be allocated to the waitlist will be charged the fee of £25 per ticket.
Please note:
There are only 12 parking spaces available on the nature reserve. Priority will be given to those with accessibility needs and /or who are sharing their car with others. Parking MUST be pre-booked with APU.
Please let us know on the booking form how you intend coming to the event and whether you are requesting a space to be reserved for you due to accessibility.
Some cars may be blocked in for the duration of the walk.
Alternative ways to get to the reserve are:
- by bike, it's on Maxey Road between Maxey and Helpston
- on foot - it's possible to walk in from Maxey village by coming down Woodgate Lane, over the green pedestrian bridge, walk west along the south bank of Maxey Cut until you get to the road bridge. Then turn left (south) and walk along the road for a short distance until you get to the entrance gate for the reserve. If you choose to come this way take great care of the road as there is no footpath, just a verge. It's just over a mile from the junction of Maxey High Street and Woodgate Lane to the entrance of the nature reserve.
Other notes:
The ground is uneven, and may be slippery / muddy. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions. You might want to bring sun screen, hat, waterproofs, water and insect repellant. Long trousers and walking shoes or boots are advised.
Once we start the walk there is no short-cut back - you'll need to retrace your steps or keep going. If you came by car you might find it is blocked it. Unfortunately it will not be possible to guarantee that you can leave the event early - you may have to wait for others to move their cars.
There are no toilet facilities or other facilities, on our route.
We will send directions on how to get to the reserve closer to the event - to the email you book your ticket(s) with. Please look out for this as the map generated by Eventbrite doesn't show the exact location and the post code is incorrect.
