The Many Dimensions of a Jewish Genealogist: Remembering Susan Steeble
Susan Steeble brought an extraordinary range of talents to genealogical research: intellectual curiosity, historical insight, meticulous documentation, archival investigation, expertise in genetic genealogy, and an unwavering determination to follow the evidence wherever it led. In this personal remembrance, genealogist and author Dr. Jeffrey Mark Paull will celebrate Sue’s life and legacy through several research projects on which they collaborated as a team.
Their journey began with Sue’s Two Tzaddiks website, devoted to Rabbi Pinchas Shapira of Koretz — Jeff’s ancestor — and Rabbi Raphael of Bershad — Sue’s ancestor. Their subsequent collaborations included identifying the Y-DNA genetic signatures of the paternal lines of both rabbis; researching John Hart — an American Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence — and identifying the Y-DNA signature of his paternal line; and reconstructing the family of the legendary tzaddik known as the Shpoler Zeida.
Drawing upon photographs, personal recollections, historical records, DNA evidence, and a case study from the Shpoler Zeida family tree — now encompassing more than 5,700 descendants — Jeff will illuminate the many dimensions of Sue’s genealogical talents and the enduring contributions she made to every project she touched.
