It will feature interesting and informative presentations by all of your favorite doctors from your helpful veterinary referral specialty clinics.
Also included will be a delicious continental breakfast and lunch with the choice of Ruth Chris's famous steaks, along with chicken, fish and a vegetarian option.
Lectures begin at 9am. Speakers at this year's conference include:
- , Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology: Electrochemotherapy: What is it and when should we use it? Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is an advanced cancer treatment option that enhances the effectiveness of traditional chemotherapy for certain tumors. This technique combines chemotherapy drugs with the local application of short, controlled electric pulses. We will discuss how it works and what types of cases are appropriate for referral.
- , CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets: Cardiovascular Effects of Systemic Disease Many systemic diseases can cause profound effects on cardiac structure and function. This lecture will discuss the impact of common systemic diseases on the heart and highlight cardiovascular considerations with treatment. The lecture will include discussion of renal disease, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disorders, and electrolyte abnormalities.
- Kathleen Rowan, DVM, DACVO, Eye Care For Animals: Management of Corneal Ulcers in Canines This presentation will outline the various types of corneal ulcers and their associated management. We will outline how to evaluate an ulcer's depth and how to determine if an infectious is suspected. We will discuss treatment options, with an emphasis on when debridement is and is not recommended. Finally, we will delineate when referral for corneal grafting should be considered, versus when enucleation should be recommended.
- , Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists: Biopsy, Remove, or Refer? Managing Masses in General Practice This presentation explores a practical approach to managing cutaneous and subcutaneous masses in general practice, focusing on the decision-making process of whether to biopsy, remove, or refer. Key topics include identifying when surgical excision is appropriate, when it may be contraindicated, and how to plan ahead to avoid compromising future treatment options. The session will also cover biopsy techniques that preserve definitive surgical margins, principles of appropriate margin selection—particularly for mast cell tumors—and the role of staging prior to intervention.
- , Veterinary Radiation Oncology of the Chesapeake: Radiation Therapy for Pituitary Tumors in Dogs Pituitary macroadenomas affect a significant percentage (10–20%) of dogs with pituitary-dependent Cushing’s disease, particularly in brachycephalic breeds like Boxers and Pugs. This presentation explores the principles, protocols, and clinical outcomes of utilizing radiation therapy as a critical and effective treatment modality for managing these challenging canine pituitary tumors.
- , Veterinary Neurology & Imaging of the Chesapeake: Clincal Pearls from the Neurological Exam Don't be intimidated by the neurological exam! We aim to provide practicing veterinarians with a practical update on the neurological examination, focusing on a hand's-off approach, and offering pearls from a practicing veterinary neurologist.
- , Pet+E.R.: Just Breathe! House Fires and Smoke Inhalation in the Veterinary ER This presentation will review the initial stabilization and management of smoke inhalation in cats and dogs. We will cover the underlying pathophysiology, common presentation, diagnostic work up, initial stabilization, and management of smoke inhalation secondary to house fire. Lastly, we will put this information into context by reviewing a case of smoke inhalation that presented to the Pet+ER.
- , Animal Dental Center: Common Dental Nerve Blocks for the Small Animal Practitioner This presentation will cover the sensory innervation of the oral cavity and the key anatomical landmarks for performing dental nerve blocks in dogs and cats. We will discuss the differences between various skull shapes, such as brachycephalic dogs, and review the four common blocks: infraorbital, mandibular alveolar, maxillary, and mental. Attendees will learn about proper dosing of local anesthetics, such as bupivacaine and lidocaine, to enhance anesthetic safety and provide effective perioperative pain management for dental procedures.
