WHAT IS A MOOT?
A pub moot is an informal gathering of people with shared interests—traditionally pagan or occult-minded individuals—who meet in a friendly, relaxed pub setting. The tradition has a long history in the UK, particularly in London, where it has provided a welcoming space for those exploring alternative spiritualities, magic, and esoteric paths to meet up, enjoy a drink or meal, and freely discuss their ideas.
Historically, pub moots offered a simple yet powerful format: no rigid schedules or ceremonies, just like-minded people coming together in a cosy pub atmosphere, where conversation flows as easily as the pints. These casual meetups have long been a cornerstone of the pagan community, acting as a social anchor where veterans and newcomers alike can network, learn, and share experiences. They are a perfect gateway into the local scene, granting visitors the chance to get to know fellow practitioners, discover events, and explore group or solo paths within a supportive environment.
Now, we’re reintroducing this tradition, with a particular focus on magick and Thelema. Whether you’re new to the subject or a seasoned practitioner, you’re welcome to come along, grab a drink, and chat about all things esoteric—be it ceremonial practice, personal magical experiences, or ways to integrate Thelemic philosophy into daily life.
The beauty of the pub moot is that there’s no pressure to perform any ritual or adhere to a strict structure: it’s simply a space to meet, make friends, and find inspiration for your spiritual and magical journey.
SIMPLE RULES
📌 Show Up If You Say You Will
Consistency is key. If you promise to attend, do your best to be there. Our moot thrives when a steady group shows up each month, so even if a couple of regulars have to skip, newcomers will still find a friendly face waiting.
📌 Suggest Topics Freely
The more ideas, the richer the conversation. Don’t hesitate to propose topics—everyone benefits from fresh perspectives and lively debate.
📌 Bring Friends, Not Drama
Feel free to invite a buddy or two (or ten!), but be mindful to bring people who respect the spirit of the gathering. Let’s keep the vibe welcoming and free of unnecessary tension.
📌 Expect Religion and Politics
We’re clearly here to talk about spirituality, but don’t be surprised if politics enters the fray. Magick and Thelema touch on deeper structures of society, so it’s only natural these topics arise.
📌 Buy a Drink
Plan to order at least one beverage (alcoholic or otherwise). Supporting the pub is part of the deal—this helps ensure they love hosting us as much as we enjoy being there.
OUR MEETING PLACE
The Fitzroy Tavern in Bloomsbury, London, has long been a legendary gathering spot for writers, artists, and free-thinkers. During the mid-20th century, its upstairs rooms were frequented by luminaries such as Dylan Thomas, George Orwell, and Nina Hamnett, who debated politics and art over pints of ale.
Amid this vibrant bohemian scene, the infamous occultist Aleister Crowley is also said to have visited, adding an air of mystique and esotericism to the tavern’s reputation.
Building on this legacy of creative and unconventional thought, since 2018 the Dylan Thomas Library has become the meeting place for the Fitzroy Consistory No.0 of Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis in Anglia, carrying forward the spirit of curiosity and cultural exploration that has always defined the Fitzroy Tavern.
