About this Event
The Midland Railway was unusual among main line companies in that it extended to London, whereas other companies started from London. This talk gives the background to the transformation of a provincial company to the second largest of the private railway companies, crowned by its arrival in St Albans in 1868. It also describes the building of the line from Bedford, through St Albans, to London, and how it planned for future success, an object lesson for modern Project Management.
Andrew Surry is the editor of the Midland Railway Society Journal and lives in Hitchin.
