The Life of Captain Peter Ickes w/James Fritz

This Martin-Leese lecture will consist of a description of the life of Captain Peter Ickes (1748-1829), born in Limerick, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Ickes moved to Berwick Village in circa 1772 where he served as postmaster, innkeeper and deacon of St John Lutheran Church in Abbottstown.
The role that Captain Ickes played in the American Revolution will also be presented based upon extant records and archival materials. The loyalist and patriot divide with his neighbors will be discussed and the sorrow that it brought to many German Baptist neighbors in and around East Berlin.
