About this Event

Welcome to North York Reading Group! The group is established with the purpose to facilitate discussion on readings about society, history, environment, humanity and philosophy.

AI is rapidly redefining our life. Most of us are excited with an additional personal assistant, but some of us are losing our jobs to it. Some may seek advices from AI on their relationship, while a few are building relationship with it. One day the border between "it" and "he/she" will be blurred and we can no longer recognize the difference. Asking how do you think about AI become the greeting word in every conversation, but Emad Mostaque wants to tell us in his book The Last Economy that this discussion is either now or ever. If Nick Bostrom is right to describe humanity's destiny as knotty, then AI may be a knot that either we still have a chance to untie now, or it will become a double fisherman's knot which will only get tighter the harder we pull.

We will have two sessions to cover the two halves of the book. Each session will start with first half hour giving a brief introduction to the corresponding half, and then a discussion on any comment / question / insight related to the ideas raised in the book. This will be a relaxed one and a half hour session without any prerequisite to join.
