Plays in Place, in partnership with MassBike, presents a series of one-acts about Kittie Knox at the height of her activism and cycling career. Kittie Knox was a young, biracial cyclist and activist in the late 1800's. During her cycling career (1893 – 1899), Kittie became a well-known century (100-mile) rider, protested the League of American Wheelmen’s color bar in 1895, and refused to conform to conventions about fast riding and wearing a long skirt while cycling. Premiering in September 2025, this outdoor theatrical experience highlights Kittie’s influence in the fight for racial and gender equality in the cycling community amidst a turbulent and uncertain time in America’s history.
The Kittie Knox Plays are made possible with the support of The Boston Foundation, The Lawrence & Lillian Solomon Foundation, Cambridge Arts, Cambridge Community Foundation, James M. & Cathleen D. Stone Foundation, and the Mass Cultural Council.
