About this Event

Canal Art is a colourful and distinctive form of British folk art, traditionally associated with the working narrowboats of Britain’s waterways.
This decorative painting became an important part of canal life during the 19th century. Roses, romantic landscapes, bold lettering and decorative patterns brought colour and character to narrowboats and the everyday objects used by the families who lived and worked aboard them.
But Canal Art is more than decoration. It became an expression of pride, identity and belonging within the boating community.
Today, traditional Canal Art and boat painting is officially listed as an Endangered Craft by Heritage Crafts, making the sharing and teaching of these skills increasingly important.
Join Rosa Lea, Canal Art artist and tutor, for a fascinating introduction to this colourful piece of British waterways heritage.
Rosa’s own Canal Art journey began through her connection with narrowboat life and led her to study the traditional techniques of Roses and Castles, including training with renowned canal boat painter and sign writer Phil Speight MBE, one of Britain’s leading practitioners of the craft.
During the session, Rosa will share some of the stories, traditions and techniques behind this remarkable folk art before inviting you to pick up a brush and have a go for yourself.
No previous painting experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and discover a little piece of colourful canal heritage.
