In the legendary domain of winemaker Christine Vernay, men and women work the steep slopes of Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu in harmony with the seasons. Together, relying on the strength of their arms, they strive to preserve this exceptional vineyard, now facing the challenges of climate change.
Doors for the Rhône Wine Seminar open at 6pm, Tasting at 6:15, Doors for Film open at 7pm, Film Screening begins 7:15 pm
THE HILLS OF WRATH (Les Chaillées de l'enfer), 102 mins, 2025. + A Special Film Intro by the Director, Léo Boudet!
The winemakers of Domaine Georges Vernay: toiling away at first light, along narrow paths on steep slopes, in all weathers, defying climate change and prejudice. Here, under the tutelage of Christine Vernay, top-quality organic wine is produced in a place where wine-growing was once thought unimaginable.
This debut film by Léo Boudet is an ode to a special place and fascinating personalities. Like wine, it’s a film that needs time to mature. For the film, Boudet worked with the Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) to create a unique interplay of music, landscape and characters. Against the background of the challenging wine-growing season of 2021, viewers see the effects of climate change, biodiversity, gender and knowledge transfer.
Director Léo Boudet also calls himself a doctor, philosopher and nuclear scientist. He has a passion for music and film. In addition to video clips, he also makes documentaries about composers and works as a cameraman, director, editor and producer. Les Chaillées d’Enfer – or ‘The Terraces of Hell’ – the original title of the film, is the same name that is given to the white wine seen in the documentary. For our optional wine tasting seminar offered before the film, we will review the entire Rhône Valley's variety of white and red wines finishing with a classic Cote-Rotie red.
Rhône Wine Seminar (+$25 per person, with light snacks), limited seating!
Les Chaillées de l'Enfer (The Hills of Wrath) focuses on the southerly French wine region of the Rhône Valley, more specifically its northern appellation of Côte-Rôtie, prized for its small production, age-worthy (and pricey!) Syrah centric red wines. For our wine tasting and seminar before the film, we will review the entire Rhône Valley's appellations, its varieties, geography and terroir, tasting a range of white and red wines finishing with a classic Cote-Rotie red. The tasting will be conducted by Epsilon Spires Board Member Rob Forman, a near forty year veteran of the fine wine and spirits profession.
