About this Event

Please note: This is an outdoor, MASK-REQUIRED event.

Join local music teacher/composer Andy Jarema at Red Oaks Nature Center as he shares his research into the relationship between bird song and music. Attendees will learn about the fascinating science behind bird song and trace the history of music composers utilizing bird song in their works. Attendees will also participate in listening exercises to identify birds by ear, including a live bird walk to try out their listening skills in the wild! All ages and ability levels welcome. This is an outdoor event. Respirators (i.e. KF94/KN95/N95 and higher rated) are required to attend this outdoor event, and must stay on for the duration of time that the attendee is present in the space. Free respirators will be provided.
We are aiming to do the first portion in an outdoor sitting space with picnic tables and a covered tent, though the park does not reserve the space so we cannot guarantee this if it is in use. The second portion will feature a walk around the Forest Trail, a flat paved trail that covers a distance of 0.6 miles.
The entire Red Oaks space is step free, though there is a very brief gravel portion (20 feet) to get to the tented picnic table area where we are first meeting. The parking lot is paved and has accessible parking spaces. There is an accessible outhouse located in the parking lot, as well as an accessible bathroom located within the nature center. The nature center bathroom is all-gender, single-occupancy with a grab bar mounted along the side wall with the toilet and behind the toilet. There is a low metal threshold while entering the nature center door.
