The Gordon Working Lads Institute was opened on Stanley Road, Kirkdale in 1886. It was named after Major General Charles Gordon - 'Gordon of Khartoum.'
It is still going strong as a community centre and it is the oldest purpose built boys club in Britain. This page looked at this old building quite a while ago.
There has always been something about the building that puzzled me. Many people believe that the building is rife with paranormal activity. Large numbers of people pay money to different companies in order to spend the night there on organised 'ghost hunts' and 'investigations.'
Why would a building whose original purpose was to help lads 'lead happy and useful lives' and which has only ever been a place of happy childhood activity be haunted?
In you believe in ghosts, then perhaps the Victorian tragedy that took place in the Gordon Institute is the reason for the strange events that are supposed to take place there.
On the 9th August 1897, the Liverpool Mercury reported on the tragic death of George Fennell, aged 38, the caretaker at the Gordon Institute. Mr Fennell had become depressed and he started to believe that people were conspiring against him. He would read reports of local suicides and say 'If that was me I would be at rest.'
When Mr Fennell never turned up for a family meeting, they became concerned and later the police broke into the Gordon Institute. They found poor Mr Fennell hanging from a rope on the concert hall stage. The coroner later recorded a verdict of 'suicide whilst temporary insane.'
We are back. This is a long awaited, much anticipated return. The last time we were here, we had several team and guests witness full bodied appartitons, hear unexplained footsteps and more. This is not one to miss.
