The Geology of Lake Tahoe: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Glaciers

Lake Tahoe did not simply fill up. It was shaped by powerful forces over millions of years. In this fast paced STEM presentation, students will learn how faults, volcanoes, glaciers, and rising mountains created the Tahoe Basin and continue to shape it today.
In this 90‑minute STEM presentation, We will learn that the Sierra Nevada are a giant tilted block, with one fault on the eastern edge running right under Lake Tahoe.
But there is much more to the story. In this fast-paced 90-minute session, we will see how:
• the lake has changed size and depth many times, growing and shrinking.
• volcanoes and lave flows helped to create it.
• a dramatic event changed the landscape and sent giant waves over the surrounding slopes.
• glaciers carved some of the best-known features.
• Lake Tahoe has such clear water.

Designed for ages 8–14, this session includes stunning videos, demonstrations, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
