About this Event
We would like to invite you to our evening of talks and food, food and talk: The Freedom to Move & Freedom to Stay: What Next for the Resistance to the “Hostile Environment".
We have wonderful speakers
- Ubah Dirie - Garden Court Chambers (Immigration Barrister). Discusses the crucial role and limits of the Human Rights Act in assisting those who can no longer stay home because of Western depredation of their environment, with a particular focus on the Niger-Delta.
- Dr Louise Purbrick – Radio Calais. Explores the problem of limbo and emancipation from it, questioning what it means to be in transit, why it is problematic and how we resist it.
- Sara Alsherif - Open Rights Group. It explores bureaucracy and surveillance as tools of exclusion and othering, even for those who have already been granted Leave to Remain: eVisa as a case in point.
- Plus Jollof Café’s chefs serve up a vegetarian Nigerian feast, jollof rice, plantain, ewa oloyin (honey beans), puff puff and delicious zobo (hibiscus juice flavoured with pineapple), proving that those with open borders and open minds have the most fun of all!
The Sussex Refugee and Migrant Self-Support Group is deeply committed to fostering community unity and support. Comprising refugees, asylum seekers, and others who have endured the trials of forced migration, this collective actively collaborates to surmount the challenges imposed upon them by the Hostile Environment. Their collective effort aims to carve out a meaningful place for themselves within the vibrant tapestry of Brighton.
A remarkable endeavor spearheaded by this group is the Jollof Café. Here, they expertly prepare dishes from their countries of origin, serving as a catalyst for fostering harmony and connection within the community. This space graciously extends a warm invitation to the settled community, encouraging active participation in the town's life, rather than mere reliance on passive support.
Jollof Cafe seeks to achieve several important objectives:
1. Alleviate the pervasive loneliness often felt by migrant communities.
2. Raise funds for their destitution support initiative.
3. Shine a spotlight on the exceptional skills and delectable cuisines crafted by volunteer cooks hailing from diverse corners of the globe.
In essence, the Sussex Refugee and Migrant Self-Support Group, through initiatives like the Jollof Café, strives to foster a sense of belonging, celebration, and shared humanity that transcends borders and celebrates the beautiful mosaic of Brighton's multicultural community.
