The Forgotten History of the Press Gallery Association

Since 1833, journalists have covered the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature through a little-understood institution known as the Press Gallery. In 1969, they created a self-governing association to manage the workspace, but there was little consensus about how much authority that association should have. In his talk, journalist Michael Connors will discuss his book, Admit Strangers, and how internal conflicts and poor institutional memory eventually called into question the very existence of the association.

Our speaker is Michael Connors, the co-anchor and Assistant News Director at NTV News. He started his career at The Telegram in 2000 and moved to NTV in 2003 as a general assignment reporter. In 2005, he was assigned to the Press Gallery in the House of Assembly and spent 16 years as NTV’s legislative reporter. He served for six years as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Press Gallery Association until 2022 when he was promoted to the anchor desk. Michael has degrees in history from Memorial University of Newfoundland and journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa.
