About this Event
Welcome to the First Amendment Series.
This is a three-week workshop that meets on Thursday nights. We will cover the basics of the First Amendment, with an emphasis on the freedom of the press.
In the U.S., freedom of the press is law as part of the Constitution. But what does that mean as threats to journalists, media institutions and storytellers becomes increasingly common? Understanding areas of media law will not only protect you, but will arm you with savvy knowledge of how to cover the most important stories of tomorrow.
Each week we will cover a new topic of media law: defamation, censorship, student press freedoms and public records, amongst other areas. This is an introductory class, so no previous experience in these areas is necessary.
We will have open discussions and collaborate on activities relevant to issues media makers are facing today. You will walk away with a robust understanding of these areas of media law and resources to help you navigate the ever-changing journalism landscape.
With so few learning opportunities for students of all ages interested in journalism and other areas of storytelling, Prior Restraint Media offers training sessions to support future media makers.
