The Dye Bar: Intro to Shibori Dyeing
An afternoon of cloth, color & creative play.
Join us at The Dye Bar for a relaxed afternoon exploring the beautiful—and wonderfully unpredictable—art of Japanese shibori.
In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore two different shibori resist-dyeing techniques, practicing each twice as you create a set of four one-of-a-kind cotton napkins. You'll choose from six beautiful dye colors and learn how folding, binding, clamping and other forms of resist can transform simple white cloth into something completely unique.
Part of the magic of shibori is the reveal: you never know exactly what will emerge when you unwrap your piece. We'll embrace the unexpected, experiment with color and celebrate the beautiful variations that make every piece different.
And this isn't meant to feel like sitting in a classroom.
We'll gather in a lovely, shady backyard in Northeast Los Angeles for three leisurely hours of making, experimenting and hanging out together—with light snacks, wine and sparkling water along the way.
Come on your own or bring a friend. No previous dyeing experience is necessary.
You'll leave with:
- Four hand-dyed cotton napkins
- Experience with two different shibori techniques
- Plenty of inspiration to continue experimenting at home

A Note About the Creative Process
Shibori is a resist-dyeing process that combines intention with surprise. While you'll learn techniques for influencing your patterns, exact results can't be predicted or replicated—and that's part of what makes it so much fun.
Every piece will emerge a little differently. Come ready to experiment, let go of perfection and discover what your cloth becomes.
