The Military Women’s Memorial (MWM) is proud to host a special Women’s History Month program honoring the courageous women who served as American Red Cross “Donut Dollies” in Vietnam.

This special program will feature a screening of “The Donut Dollies: 627 Women Who Also Served in Vietnam,” the award-winning documentary by Libbie Hegvik and Madison Munson. The program will also include remarks from MWM President Phyllis Wilson, filmmaker Libbie Hegvik, and special guests, followed by a panel discussion.

Please join us prior to the program, 12:15pm - 1:15pm, for camaraderie and light refreshments.

Amreican Red Cross Donut Dollies of Vietnam

Often overlooked in the history of the Vietnam War, 627 young women volunteered to serve in combat zones through the American Red Cross Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO) program. Stationed in remote and often dangerous locations, they brought connection, compassion, and morale to servicemembers far from home—often traveling by helicopter to firebases and working in forward areas of operation.

Though they did not carry weapons, they served in combat zones and faced many of the same risks as the troops they supported. Their bravery and dedication not only strengthened morale in Vietnam, but also positively impacted the future of women's roles in the military—an important chapter in the 250-year legacy of women serving our Nation.

THE VIETNAM DONUT DOLLIES' LEGACY

During the Vietnam War, Donut Dollies—American Red Cross volunteers—traveled into combat zones to provide troops with a momentary reprieve from war. Their presence boosted morale, provided critical psychological support, and created lasting connections. Three women gave their lives in service, and one was awarded the Purple Heart. Their stories continue to inspire and deserve national recognition.

As American Red Cross President Gail J. McGovern said:

"The Donut Dollies spent countless hours traveling by jeep, truck, boat, and helicopter to often remote bases throughout South Vietnam, and they were subject to the same sniper fire, mortars, and rocket attacks as service members. Yet through all the dangers and hardships they faced, these young women remained calm, courageous, and respectful of the military situation. They proved themselves brave, strong, and compassionate – and their exemplary efforts in a war zone undoubtedly helped to open doors and expand the scope of women’s roles in the military."

Event Photos

Located at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the Military Women’s Memorial is the nation’s only major memorial and education center dedicated to honoring and preserving the stories of all women who have served—past and present. Since the American Revolution, more than 3 million women have worn the uniform, yet their stories often remain untold.

Furthermore, many women—driven by a desire to serve their country despite limited opportunities—stepped forward in various capacities (Red Cross, USO, Cadet Nurse Corps, to name a few) during times of war when their support was needed most. The Military Women’s Memorial proudly honors these women under the banner of “We Also Served,” ensuring their stories of service, sacrifice, and dedication are preserved and recognized at the Memorial.

For over 25 years, the Memorial has been committed to illuminating the stories of women's service through powerful exhibits, world-class collections, and meaningful programs. By preserving these legacies and making them accessible to all, we aim to educate the public and inspire future generations—empowering our youth to lead, serve, and break barriers of their own.
