The Choral (Cert 12A) is written by one of our national treasures, Leeds born Alan Bennett (famous for ‘Talking Heads’ monologues and ‘Lady in the Van’), this gentle, feel-good film is shot in Saltaire, a spectacular world heritage site near Bradford. Ralph Fiennes takes the lead as Dr Guthrie, a choir master hired by desperate locals in 1916. WW1 is well under way and it is a time of loss and confusion, with many already dead or missing and others waiting to be conscripted. It’s a meddled social order, allowing some to find space they might not have otherwise occupied, shown in the new makeup of the choir which Guthrie must craft and control.
