Originally from Africa, the chekere (or abê in Brazil) is part of various Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music traditions and is also found in popular music settings. In this workshop, we’ll learn rhythms from the Cuban folkloric music called Güiro and from Maracatú in Brazil.Instructor Brian Rice will also share techniques to help develop your facility on the instrument and inspire your creativity. We will learn what makes a chekere playable or not, the differences between glass, plastic, wooden, or shell beads, and discuss how to make your own as well.
This workshop is open to all levels, and Brian will supply several chekeres for use in class. It is a rather loud instrument, so earplugs are recommended. Join us to explore the vibrant sounds and rhythms of the chekere and enhance your musical skills!
About Brian Rice
Brian Rice, a Bay Area percussionist, performer, educator, and recording artist, specializes in Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion, collaborating with musicians like Mike Marshall, Jovino Santos Neto, and Claudia Villela. With over 75 recordings, Brian’s rhythmic mastery shines. In 2023, he premiered the first pandeiro concerto with the Diablo Symphony Orchestra and released his album “Três Baías” in 2019. He’s graced venues like Lincoln Center and NPR Tiny Desk Concert with the Danilo Brito Quintet. Brian is the co-founder of the Berkeley Festival of Choro and has over 35 years of teaching experience. He directs ensembles at UC Davis, where he nurtures students’ passion for rhythm and music.
