The Changing Face of Engineering EducationInaugural Lecture with Professor Matt Murphy: Saving the planet and improving life upon it: the changing face of engineering education
A sustainable future for our planet, and the quality of life upon it, will rely on the work of professional engineers, arguably more than any other discipline. The challenge for engineering education is to equip our graduates with the blend of knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience they will require to meet the demands of society in the 21st century and beyond.
In this inaugural lecture, Matt will draw on his own experiences to explore the past, present and future of engineering education. He will consider what graduates need to know and be able to do; the evolution of learning and teaching; and the role of universities in ensuring a sustainable future.
Matt has a degree in Metallurgy & Materials Science from the University of Liverpool. In 1994 he was awarded a PhD for his work developing the additive manufacture (3D printing) of metals. He then spent 10 years in university and industrial research: developing additive manufacturing technology and introducing it to European industry. In 2004 Matt changed his focus from engineering research to engineering education; working first for the Higher Education Academy and since 2007 as an academic in the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool. In 2023 Matt was awarded a Chair in Engineering Education and became a Principal Fellow of the HEA.
