The Cards We're Dealt: A Generative Writing Workshop

In the traditional game of Lotería, the dealer recites a poem or riddle based on the card they are dealing. Inspired by the tradition, in this workshop, we will be generating writing based on the Lotería cards we’re dealt. Each Lotería card has its own unique image as well as a unique meaning, and everyone is encouraged to create their own stories, poems, or riddles in tandem with their cards. We'll also be utilizing the deck to create new, experimental word combinations and lines as a way of creating new meaning from phrases we might've not thought of before.

This FREE workshop will be taught by Angelina Leaños.

A queer Latina writer, Angelina is the Ventura County Youth Poet Laureate Emerita and a third-year MFA student at Fresno State. She serves as a Poetry Out Loud coach and poet-teacher, mentoring youth in poetry recitation and creative writing, and is a member of the California Poets in the Schools Board of Directors as well as Managing Editor of The Normal School. Her work has been published in Urban Word, Arkana, Poetry Daily, and Reed Magazine, among others.
