The book is a relatively new mainstay of many a domestic sphere. The double cylinder press was first used in London in 1814, thereby quintupling the prior rate of print production. The rest, as they say, is history, as production methods continued to improve alongside raising literacy rates to the point now where the proliferation of relatively cheap paperback books is taken for granted. Is the book just one commodity among a sea of others, an artifact of the industrial revolution, another form of consumerism? Or is it something else? Does a book achieve something over and beyond the status of a mere commodity by virtue of its place within a collection, its inhabited corner within a domestic space, its value within a life? Come join us as we discuss the philosophy of books, collecting, and their place in the home. Our discussion will revolve around three short essays by Walter Benjamin and Georges Perec, which you can download from our shared drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dYFRMexww4pvHFMJ9Tb7i-yYfbVsWWl6?usp=sharing
