Welcome to Bad Women season 2!After a successful first season of the bookclub, we're back with three more works of fiction where we will follow women who are complex, unsympathetic, angry and tired.
Just like in last season, we will be comparing themes, character arcs and storylines across three works of fiction. This fall we will be reading Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, The Vegetarian by Han Kang and Big Swiss by Jen Beagin.
Boy Parts by Eliza Clark: Irina, a troubled photographer with a penchant for extreme cinema, finds herself on forced leave from her bar job. During this time, she receives a prestigious exhibition opportunity in London. To prepare, she revisits her past work, confronting her artistic journey and the dark undercurrents of her artistic choices, particularly her obsession with photographing unsuspecting men in explicit situations. The novel explores themes of sexuality, gender dynamics, the nature of consent, and the blurred lines between reality and fantasy.
The Vegetarian by Han Kang: This South Korean novel tells the story of Yeong-hye, a seemingly ordinary housewife who makes an abrupt decision to stop eating meat. This seemingly simple act becomes a catalyst for a chain of events, causing a rift between Yeong-hye and her family and society. The exploration of her vegetarianism delves deeper, becoming a metaphor for her struggle for autonomy and identity. The story is told from multiple perspectives, offering a fragmented and thought-provoking glimpse into Yeong-hye's world.

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin: This darkly comic novel follows a group of American expatriates living in Zurich, Switzerland. The seemingly idyllic lives of these families unravel as secrets are revealed, marriages crumble, and societal pressures take their toll. Beagin's satirical wit takes aim at expat life, cultural clashes, and the pursuit of happiness amidst a backdrop of wealth and privilege.

The goal of the book club is to be able to cross-compare the three books (and maybe even the books in the first season of the book club), but feel free to show up only to one, two, or all of the meet-ups <3 The books will be sold in the bookshop - shoot us a message if you want us to reserve one for you!
