Join us for the second event in our Free Avalanche Education Series as we dive into the core theme of the season: decision-making in the backcountry.
This year, we’re framing the evening around one fundamental question: "How do I pick where I am going today?"
To kick things off, local guidebook author Richard Bothwell will share a 15-minute presentation bridging terrain selection with daily hazard evaluation. Drawing on insights from Light Tours of Tahoe, Richard will break down how to evaluate snowpack, weather, and avalanche forecasts to choose the right zone for the day's conditions.
Following Richard, Anthony Cupaiuolo (Executive Director of Tahoe Backcountry Alliance) and photojournalist Claire DeWitt will take the stage for a 30–40 minute mixed-media presentation: a visual "Backcountry Tour of Tahoe & Truckee." Through high-resolution photography, video clips, and stories from the field, Anthony and Claire will walk you through their favorite local zones, how to find the best light, what goes into capturing compelling mountain shots, and how they keep their touring light, fresh, and fun while staying safe.
You'll also get the inside scoop on essential everyday logistics: trailhead parking, skin track etiquette, and winter backcountry stewardship across Truckee and Tahoe.
Don't miss this chance to sharpen your decision-making and get inspired for winter! Doors open at 6:00 PM—come early to grab a beer, snacks, and a good seat before the formal presentation begins at 6:30 PM
