About this Event
This is a challenging walk and must only be attempted by very fit hill walkers who are appropriately equipped.
The Devil's Beef Tub, a cavernous hollow nestled between four hills, is a striking Moffat landmark.
It is a tranquil spot with jaw-dropping panoramic views and a fascinating history. William Wallace is said to have used this area for covert gatherings back in 1297.
The route takes us round the top of the Beef Tub so you will be able to see where local clans hid the cattle they snatched in raids during the lawless Border Wars
Today, its native woodlands and heather moors are being nurtured and restored to encourage a return of Scottish wildlife such as the golden eagle, mountain hare and black grouse. It’s popular too for walkers, para-gliders and runners.
We begin at Annanhead, which is at the top of the historic Beef Tub. We then traverse the Beef Tub ridge line and, after some rather steep ascents and descents on, at times, rough ground, we reach the highest point of the walk. Hart Fell is a corbett of 808m that affords spectacular views in all directions.
Once we've enjoyed those views, and got our breath back we head down to skirt the crags at the top of the impressive Blackshope valley, via Falcon Craig and Swatte Fell, before sharply descending to Capplegill Farm where our bus back to town awaits.
Although this is a 10-miler, your new walking mates and the spectacular scenery will spur you on.
Transport is included to return us back to town.
**Top tip - This is an all-day walk so you may want to bring a packed lunch
