The Barbershop Exhibition - Shaping Up The Community
About this Event
This immersive event will trace the evolution of the Barbershop Experience pop-up intervention, successfully delivered by STEP NOW across six Lambeth secondary schools over the past two academic years.
The exhibition will bring together, within the same shared space, the pop-up barbershop itself alongside findings and artwork emerging from Dr Karis Campion’s original research on Black-owned barbershops in South London, which directly informed the successful funding bid for the intervention. Experienced together as a single immersive environment, the exhibition highlights the connections between the lived experience of the intervention and the academic research that supports it.
Throughout the day, members of the public will be invited to take part in interactive workshops, meet the mentors and barbers involved in the project, experience elements of the curriculum, receive complimentary haircuts, and watch a documentary screening about the programme. There'll also be an opportunity to watch a powerful live podcast featuring a clinical therapist, a mentor, and a barber in conversation as Black men, exploring how barbershop conversations create space for honest dialogue around men’s wellbeing, identity, lived experience, support, and community impact.
