Rhode Island native and acclaimed artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) recalled living, studying and working in Philadelphia during the 1790s, describing it as the time “when I resided in the Athens of America.”
During this period, our newly formed republic and Philadelphia were in recovery from the Revolutionary War; so, how was it that life in Philadelphia reflected the ideals of Athens, Greece? One answer, simply put, is Philadelphians’ legacies of acclaimed and successful artistic output: painting, sculpture, architecture and the decorative arts became the city’s calling card, much like that of Newport
