About this Event
In 1891, Naismith invented the game of basketball as a cure to the poverty stricken slums of urban hotspots being hit by the wave of immigration from parts of Europe and the West Indies. Without the public health systems we have today, it was thought that physical activity was the cure to the spread of diseases witnessed in the jam-packed Burroughs of New York City.
Civic leaders wanted a sport that utilized the physique and also the brains. As it evolved, basketball became a form of Americanization for incoming immigrants - the white ones at least. it wasn't till decades later that black church leaders began forming leagues of their own, to circumnavigate the prohibition of blacks from the sport.
Today, Baltimore breeds professional hoopers that thrive on the backs of the urban legends that paved way. It's not just a sport - ball is life, culture, and The aesthetic.
on the Friday of MLK weekend, youth and families will have an opportunity to pick up the paintbrush and design the art of basketball from 2:30-4:30pm. The Art show will follow suit at 4:30 after the workshop.
