ABOUT THE BOOK: The Alaskan Blonde looks at the unsolved 1953 murder of Cecil Wells in Fairbanks, Alaska, by interviewing family members, searching the FBI files and finding some unpublished diaries in order to reexamine the case against his wife Diane. Blonde, glamorous and 20 years younger than Cecil, she said two men broke into the apartment and killed Cecil before attacking her, but police were immediately suspicious, and a tip-off led them toward her alleged lover, Black musician Johnny Warren. But who was William Colombany, a Guatemalan dance instructor nicknamed “The Third Suspect,” and what was the tragic Hollywood ending to the case?
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Originally from London, James T. Bartlett is author of the Anthony Award-nominated true crime book The Alaskan Blonde, which reexamines a scandalous 1953 murder that began in Alaska and ended with a suicide in Hollywood.
He also wrote the Gourmet Ghosts alternative guides to Los Angeles and has appeared on Ghost Adventures and The UnXplained, while as a travel and lifestyle journalist he has written for the Los Angeles Times, BBC, Thrillist, ALTA California, National Geographic Traveler, Westways, Frommers, Crime Reads, Atlas Obscura and Ripperologist Magazine, among others.
ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse, Friendship Auditorium, located at 3201 Riverside Drive, near the corner of Los Feliz Boulevard, in Griffith Park. Best described as a variety show, attendees enjoy a catered breakfast, silly songs, club traditions, and an interesting presentation from a guest speaker.
