About the workshop
Artistic direction: Silke Z. & Caroline Simon
Aging concerns all of us throughout our entire life. This reveals questions about how aging moves us, how we want to move as we age and how we shape aging both socially and artistically. Exploring these issues through physical and dance-based activities in an environment that is low-hierarchy and non-judgemental gives participants the opportunity to question, explore and experience.
By means of improvisation, feedback methods, composition tools and creative reflection, Silke and Caroline invite the "generation +" to discover the personal and collective creativity as well as physical resources through body, movement and dance.
This is a special opportunity to study with visiting artists for a week this new year and participate in an informal performance at the event of the week! Silke and Caroline have longstanding Bay Area ties to the work of Jess Curtis/Gravity and Moving on Center. SADC is thrilled to host them this January. The Aging Body Lab is a wonderful connection and extension to the thriving Dance for Older Movers classes offered weekly at SADC with Robin Nasatir.
Who is it for?
Dancers of all levels who identify as older movers or "generation +." No particular age requirement.
Meet your teachers
Silke Z. (*1970) has led a Cologne-based company since 1999 that has developed over 40 dance productions in Germany and abroad, for which she received numerous German and international rewards and nominations. Silke searches for forward-looking methods of artistic development in contemporary dance. She and her ensemble see dance as an expression of human sensitivities and as a way of making different perspectives visible and initiating discourse. She promotes identity-creating participation and innovative mediation formats in contemporary dance and founded the ehrenfeldstudios in Cologne and the international operating network studiotrade.
Caroline Simon (*1977) studied in Belgium and the Netherlands and has lived in Cologne, Germany since 2001. She danced in over 30 productions by Silke Z. and created her own choreographic work until 2008. Together with Silke Z., she founded the international network studiotrade and co-directs the intergenerational venue ehrenfeldstudios in Cologne. Nowadays, she focuses on dance improvisation as an artform. For her, the art of improvisation is a highly relevant artform, carrying democratic and social values. Herewith, Caroline aims to bridge art with societal and political issues, making dance accessible to all.
