Tertulia: Latinx Experiences in Higher Ed Plática

Come join us for a lively discussion on Latinx experiences in higher education at The Gildred Room in the Latin American Studies Building. Our panel of students, faculty, and alumni will share insights, stories, and advice on navigating the college journey as a Latinx scholar. Whether you're a current student, educator, or just interested in learning more, this event is for you! Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect and engage with the Latinx community in academia.
Panelists:

Prof. Olivia A. Graeve (http://graeve.ucsd.edu/) joined the University of California San Diego in 2012 and is currently the Elias Masry Endowed Chair in Engineering, Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Director of the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials and Systems (http://resilientmaterials.ucsd.edu/), Director of the Program of Materials Science and Engineering, and 24-25 Chair of the UC San Diego Academic Senate.  She holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering (2001) from the University of California, Davis, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Structural Engineering (1995) from the University of California San Diego.  Her area of research focuses on the design and processing of new materials for extreme environments, including extremes of temperature, pressure, and radiation.  Prof. Graeve has been involved in many activities related to the recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented minority students in science and engineering and has received several prestigious awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in 2020.  She has been inducted into the Tijuana Walk of Fame (2014), the Mexican Academy of Engineering (2016), the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2019), the Latin American Academy of Sciences (2022), and has been named Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2017) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2021).

Dia Celaya Carrillo is a first-generation nonbinary Latinx college student who was born in South El Monte and raised in Baldwin Park, CA. They're a third-year student studying to obtain a B.S. in Public Health with a Concentration in Community Health Sciences and a B.A. in Political Science with a Concentration in Race, Ethnicity, and Politics at UC San Diego. Their leadership and community experience include holding an executive board position in MEChA as Co-Chair, Vice President External in SOHIL, a student mentor for the 2Excel Program at OASIS, a past McNair Scholar, Ajilla Fellow, and a public health student researcher. By developing tailored recruitment strategies and organizing retention-based programming, they play a crucial role in both organizations by fostering a supportive environment that facilitates academic success and holistic well-being for Latinx/ BIPOC students. They plan to pursue a PhD/ JD dual degree program to pursue a career as a public health lawyer in the government sector, continue occupational health research, and teach public health classes at a top research university as a professor.

Juliana Diaz was born and raised in Southern California in a predominantly Latin@, working-class, and immigrant community in the city of Santa Ana. After completing her bachelor's degree in Sociology (and a minor in Spanish) in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California, she went on to pursue her Masters in Latin American Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her thesis focuses on centering the experiences of young adults in the San Diego-Tijuana border region and their navigation of the U.S.-Mexico border, seeking to understand how said experiences impact their sense of self and belonging to both nation states through discourse about parallel lives and imagined futures. Outside of academia, Juliana enjoys spending quality time with people she cares about and catching up—or at least attempting to—with her ever-growing list of albums to listen to!
