Terror Talks - Vaimpír: Bram Stoker and the Irish Roots of Dracula
About this Event
Following a sold-out evening exploring monsters and folklore, Alternative Ulstours returns to the Boundary Taproom for a chilling journey into the world of vampires.
Long before Dracula emerged from the shadows, Ireland's own bloodthirsty undead stalked the imagination of generations. Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours as he uncovers the gruesome Irish influences behind Bram Stoker's legendary Gothic masterpiece.
Delve into the psychological, historical and folkloric roots of Dracula, exploring how Ireland helped shape one of literature's most enduring horrors. Discover how the devastating cholera epidemic of the 1830s haunted the young Stoker during a serious childhood illness, and learn about his later encounters with Ireland's darker traditions, including a notorious "suicide graveyard" where the dead were once pinned into their coffins to prevent their return.
The evening will also trace a fascinating timeline of Irish vampire folklore, from the infamous Abhartach, Ulster's tyrannical sorcerer and, according to some historians, Europe's earliest vampire, through to the lasting impact of these legends on modern popular culture.
Combining history, folklore, literature and the macabre, this is a captivating night of dark storytelling for anyone fascinated by Ireland's haunted past and the origins of Dracula. Settle in at the Boundary Taproom and enjoy a night of dark storytelling alongside great beer.
