Tending the Trace is a degree show presentation by Jie Zhang, developed as part of the MLitt Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art) programme at The Glasgow School of Art.
The project centres on a research-led publication and an archive-style display exploring maintenance, material time, decay, and protocols of care in living-system exhibitions.
Visitors will encounter printed publications, labels, diagrams, process documentation, and images recording the growth and decay of SCOBY. The presentation considers how living materials are maintained, documented, interpreted, and eventually brought to an end within exhibition contexts.
No live SCOBY, liquids, food materials, or active biological cultures will be displayed. The project is presented entirely through printed and visual documentation.
