Does your teenager know how to change a flat tire or check the oil in their vehicle? Do they understand the type of vehicle insurance coverage they have? If a police officer pulled them over, would they know what to do?
After earning a driver’s license, many teenagers focus on their newfound freedom of not having to ask a parent or guardian for a ride but there are a number of other responsibilities that come with driving such as automotive care, insurance information, and being a responsible sober driver.
To provide a one-stop shop of information, Sheri Cates- State Farm Agent and The Town of Mount Airy are partnering together to host a free Teen Driver Event April 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company (MAVFC) Carnival Grounds, 1008 Twin Arch Rd.
There will be a drunk goggles station where participants will drive golf carts. Greg’s Driving School will be hosting a parking clinic. (A learner’s permit is required to partake in this activity.) The Mount Airy Police Department will be onsite to do traffic stop simulations so teens will know what to expect if they are pulled over by an officer. There will be a roll over simulator so teens can understand what could happen in a crash. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will have a K-9 team onsite and deputies will discuss how they use drones and radar to control traffic.
Sheri Cates and her staff will be doing Insurance 101 informational sessions. A crash demonstration by the MAVFC will prepare teens for how first responders approach a scene in case they are in an accident. Food trucks will be onsite with menu items available for purchase as well as a DJ spinning music.
The layout of the event is designed to take participants on a full circle journey on aspects of learning to drive as well as purchasing and maintaining a vehicle.
