Get ready to dive into the world of tech and innovation with Somali businesses leading the way towards growth and success!
About this Event

From the marketplace to the metaverse, Somali entrepreneurs and innovators are finding new ways to connect with customers, strengthen communities, and expand their impact.

Join us on Saturday 18th of October at Oxford House from 4 to 6 PM for Tech for Growth: Somali Businesses in Action. This event celebrates Somali-led businesses and initiatives in the UK and across the diaspora that are using technology not just to grow revenue, but to serve their people and preserve their culture.

Through case studies and a lively panel, we’ll hear from founders and practitioners who are turning ideas into impact with practical tools, from digital payment systems to social media campaigns, logistics apps to e-learning platforms. We’ll explore how tech is being used to sustain and scale Somali-owned businesses, improve access to education, and connect the diaspora to opportunities at home and abroad.

Meet representatives from Somalis in Tech, including Abshir Ahmed, and Hana Abdi from 01 Founders in conversation with Kareema Hersi

After the discussion, a small business showcase will set up for three Somali or Somali-led tech ventures the chance to share their work directly with attendees.

Who it’s for: Somali founders, creatives, community organisations, and anyone passionate about how our community can thrive through technology.

Abshir Ahmed is a seasoned Software Engineer with a robust track record in both startup environments and established organizations. As the Founder and Technical Director of Somalis in Tech, he leads a dynamic global community of over 4,000 members, fostering diversity and inclusion within the tech industry.

Hana Abdi, also known as HanaCodes, is an award-winning speaker who has been in tech for over 10 years. She is the founder of Hana Codes and the community Bridge The Gap In Tech. In 2021, Hana was featured in the book The Voices In The Shadow, which showcases and amplifies the voices of game-changing black women in tech.

Kareema Hersi is a lawyer and community advocate who champions Somali cultural initiatives and artistic expressions. She uses her expertise in marketing, social engagement, and artistic direction to amplify Somali voices and enhance the visibility of Somali arts in the UK.
