Helsinki Pride: The Godmother & Other Legends (storytelling)

The Godmother & Other Legends features true stories of growing up in a secret society of women in 1950s and 60s England, as remembered and told by Julian Garner.
At the age of 65, Garner discovers that his mother and godmother had a romantic relationship throughout his childhood, and that their home was a hub for the circle of friends they surrounded themselves with. Through a combination of storytelling and archival photographs, Garner paints the landscape of his childhood and introduces the audience to the gallery of people who helped raise and shape him.

The show has been widely performed in the UK, Finland, Denmark and Norway.
Garner is an award-winning British playwright living in Finland since 1998. His plays have been performed in Europe, North America and beyond. The Godmother & Other Legends is his debut as a live storyteller.
Audience response:
"It was like an extraordinary movie. I was bewitched!" (Lauri, Fiskars)
"I'm so pleased to have seen this. The personal is political." (Claire, London)
"Thank you for sharing this piece of queer history with us. It was a joy to listen." (Charlotta & Armen, Turku)
"A wonderful 'historiekrans' with beautiful images and all the love a person needs." (Kim, Copenhagen)
