What to do when an expecting mama walks into your class, with supportive language, meaningful choice, and practical adaptations.
About this Event

This workshop is part of Edge Yoga School’s Trauma-Informed Series: Teaching Trauma-Informed Yoga to Special Populations.

Many yoga teachers encounter pregnant students before completing specialized prenatal yoga training. This practical workshop introduces foundational prenatal considerations through a trauma-informed lens.

The session emphasizes supportive language, respectful communication, meaningful choice, appropriate adaptations, and the creation of a class environment in which an expecting mama can feel included without being unnecessarily singled out or treated as fragile.

Participants will explore how to respond more confidently when a pregnant student arrives in a general yoga class and how to recognize when deeper prenatal knowledge or specialized support may be needed.

Each workshop in the Trauma-Informed Series stands on its own. Participants do not need to attend all three sessions.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Welcoming an expecting mama into a general yoga class
  • Using supportive, clear, and non-alarming language
  • Asking relevant questions without becoming intrusive
  • Offering choices and common movement adaptations
  • Respecting the student’s autonomy and lived experience
  • Avoiding assumptions about pregnancy
  • Considering pacing, transitions, positioning, and comfort
  • Creating inclusion without drawing unnecessary attention
  • Recognizing the scope of a general yoga teacher

Trauma-informed prenatal yoga is not only about which postures to modify. It is also reflected in the questions we ask, the words we choose, the options we offer, and the way we respect each student’s individual experience of pregnancy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Welcome an expecting mama with greater confidence and sensitivity
  • Use clearer, more supportive language
  • Offer common movement choices without making assumptions
  • Consider pacing, positioning, transitions, and comfort
  • Recognize the boundaries of a general yoga teacher’s scope
  • Identify when deeper prenatal education or specialized support may be appropriate

A REAL-WORLD PRENATAL YOGA OFFERING

Participants will examine this completed Eventbrite listing as a repeatable professional model. The workshop demonstrates how a complete prenatal offering is developed through:

  • A clear title and subtitle
  • A welcoming description
  • Supportive and inclusive language
  • Learning objectives
  • A structured agenda
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Professional photography and video
  • Registration information
  • Continuing education details
  • A pathway into advanced prenatal yoga training

The example demonstrates how yoga teachers can organize and present prenatal classes, private sessions, small groups, workshops, continuing education programs, and specialty offerings.

YOGA ALLIANCE CONTINUING EDUCATION

Participants who complete this workshop will receive a Yoga Alliance YACEP continuing education certificate from Edge Yoga School.

This workshop can help Registered Yoga Teachers work toward the training hours required during each Yoga Alliance continuing education cycle.
