Tasting the Teas of Kyushu & Exploring Japanese Christianity in Literature

Join us for an exciting in-person event where you'll get to savor unique teas from Kyushu while diving into fascinating Japanese literary works. It's a perfect combo of taste and culture, ideal for tea lovers and bookworms alike. Come sip, read, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with fellow enthusiasts!

Through tasting the teas of Kyushu and exploring the literary works of one of Japan's most prolific writers, Shusaku Endo, we examine the history of Christianity in Japan. 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of Endo's seminal novel, "Chinmoku," known as "Silence" in the English-speaking world. Focusing mainly on the teas of Kagoshima and Nagasaki, we will explore the world of Silence and Japan's troubled relationship with Christianity. No prior knowledge of the books or topic is required, but it is certainly encouraged.

Bio: Chris Coll is an educator, published short-fiction author, martial artist, and tea nerd from the Bronx, New York. He has had a lifelong interest in all things related to Japan, including Japanese history, culture, martial arts, religion, and tea culture. Chris holds a Bachelor's Degree in Japanese Studies and a Master's Degree in International Education. He has previously lived, worked, and studied in the Kansai region of Japan.
