The Story Behind Bodegas Salentine
Bodegas Salentein sits high in Argentina's Uco Valley, a remote stretch of Mendoza where the Andes dominate the horizon. Founded in the 1990s by Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon — who named the estate after his family's property in the Netherlands — Salentein was one of the first wineries to bet big on the Uco Valley, helping transform it into the most sought-after wine region in Argentina.
The winery sits at 4,000 feet elevation in the center of its vineyards, with the snow-capped Andes rising to over 20,000 feet just to the west. The extreme altitude means intense sun by day and cold mountain nights — conditions that give these wines their signature combination of ripeness and freshness. The winery itself is built in the shape of a cross, with wine moving from tank to barrel by gravity alone, and a cellar 29 feet underground where 5,000 French oak barrels rest at a constant 54°F.
Meet Your Host: Dennis Koelewijn
Director of Sales, North America — Bodegas Salentein
A Dutch wine veteran, Dennis began his career distributing South African wine before Argentina pulled him in for good in 2006. Nearly two decades later, he knows Salentein's Uco Valley vineyards inside and out — and he's coming to Nashville to pour the wines that made him stay. Come taste why.
