The Story Behind Tinto Nero
TintoNero was born from a 15-year friendship. Alejandro Sejanovich and Jeff Mausbach met as colleagues at Bodega Catena Zapata — Alejandro as Vineyard Director, Jeff as Wine Education Director — and spent over a decade studying Mendoza's terroir together, block by block. That shared obsession became TintoNero: a portfolio built to isolate and showcase the specific vineyard sites where Malbec reaches its fullest expression, from the easy-drinking style of Luján de Cuyo to the concentrated, complex character of high-altitude sites like Paraje Altamira and Uco Valley. This isn't just Malbec. It's a map of Mendoza, told one vineyard at a time.
Meet Your Host: Jeff Mausbach, Co-Owner & Wine Director
Jeff's path to Argentina started with a chance encounter — backpacking through Europe in 1991, he met his future wife Veronica in a small pensione in front of the Vatican. The romance eventually pulled him from a sommelier gig in Chicago to Buenos Aires in 1996, where wine legend Nicolás Catena personally recruited him to build Catena Zapata's export division. Over the next 13 years as the winery's Wine Education Director, Jeff traveled the world making the case for high-altitude Mendoza Malbec — expertise that became the foundation for TintoNero, the label he later co-founded with longtime Catena colleague Alejandro Sejanovich. Join us August 27th for a rare chance to taste his wines poured by the man himself.
