About this Event

The Moon: The Persistence of Memory

Come join this month's discussion on The Moon! Please bring a deck if you have one- there will be a few extra on hand though if you need it. All levels welcome.

More than any other card in the deck, The Moon represents Yin/Feminine energy. It is a reminder of what The High Priestess and The Magician would be honoring long before The Hierophant and it's attendant institutions existed. It is a call back to something much older than even religion itself. The waxing and waning of The Moon was ritual before ritual existed. It speaks to all that is ineffable; the very things tarot helps us to scratch at the surface of. The collective unconscious, dreams, ancestors, the cycles of nature.

The Moon card echoes themes of balance and polarity that we see throughout the deck and throughout the Major Arcana specifically. Posed between the two pillars, the wolf represents our instinctual, animalistic side; the dog our more domesticated, civilized side. The crayfish emerging from the water is something primordial; deeper than memory.

Astrologically, this card stands out as odd; the Moon rules Cancer, but to keep the signs in the correct order, the Golden Dawn assigned it to Pisces. As such, this ties it to the 12th House, known as The House of Bad Spirit or The House of Self Undoing. The 12th House is associated with dreams, ancestors, and deep healing, but also isolation and hidden enemies; none more lethal than ourselves. It is also the final sign of the zodiac, tying it to endings and the closing of cycles- but in that it carries the potential for renewal. As Mutable Water, it can also be highly adaptable, compassionate, and spiritual; a place of culmination, integration, and deep connection.

Ticket price: Sliding Scale $7 - $10 (in-person event only)

Presenter Bios:

Jenny Ruiz, a lifelong witch, was first drawn to tarot at the age of 8, and grew up reading for friends and family. The name Burning Times has been with her since the age of 19, and she chose it because it's a reminder that there will always be outside forces who are hostile to what we do; to femmes, to seekers, and to anyone considered Other. Though she has taken breaks from social media, she still does events and reads for private clients. One of her greatest joys in life is helping others connect to their own intuition and inner guidance.

Deborah Netburn has been turning to tarot for wisdom and guidance in her own life for over two decades. Largely self-taught, she is excited to gather and learn with other tarot enthusiasts in the LA area who share her love and reverence for the deep symbolic language of the cards.Deborah has had a lifelong fascination with humanity's rich variety of religious and spiritual practices and currently writes about faith, spirituality and joy for the Los Angeles Times.
