★★★ HANBOJUTSU – FROM TRADITION TO REALITY ★★★
Dear friends and training partners,
After two films — one drawn from Hatsumi Sensei’s *Stick Fighting techniques for Self Defence* and one from the traditional hanbō of Kukishin-ryū — it is time to let those two worlds meet on the floor. And to do so in memory of someone who carried that very tool as if it were part of him.
It was Hatsumi Soke who gave him the name. On his first trip to Japan, in 1988, he brought his three daughters. He was about 52 or 53. When Soke saw them on the tatami he simply said Papa-san. The name stuck, as naturally as the smile.
I remember him from 1997. I was about 32. He was already carrying the cane then, with that wide smile and no end of stories.
Five years later I invited him for the first time, to Kaigousuru in Stockholm. It mattered to me. Not because a new chapter was beginning, but because up close I saw how he carried age and the limits of the body — what all of us meet sooner or later — and still kept teaching, laughing, and taking up space. Between 2002 and 2007 he came five times to the taikai I organized. 2007 was the last year I held Kaigousuru, but it was not the last time we met.
Ed Martin died on 13 July 2017.
Now that I have reached about the same age he was when I first saw him, I want to pass on the cane self-defence I learned from him in those years. Timing, natural movement, and a tool you can actually take with you. The same thing he gave so many others.
This is a one-day seminar for practitioners with experience in budo or other martial arts — not only Japanese. If you already have a solid foundation and want to go behind the technique, into the principles, you are welcome. We will look at how simple self-defence and traditional structure can live in the same cane.
A warm welcome. I look forward to seeing you.
Happy Training!
